The Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) is the technology used for digital signatures.<\/p>\n<h2>Digital Signatures Consist of:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Owner\u2019s name.<\/li>\n<li>The Owner\u2019s public key.<\/li>\n<li>The Expiration date of the Owner\u2019s public key.<\/li>\n<li>The name of the Issuing Certification Authority.<\/li>\n<li>Serial Number assigned to the digital signature.<\/li>\n<li>The digital signature of the issuer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A physical copy of the tax return need not be submitted if e-filing is being done with a digital signature.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Register a Digital Signature with the Department of Income Tax:<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Step 1:\u00a0<\/strong>To get started with the process of registering and using a digital signature for the purposes of e-filing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.antworksmoney.com\/blog\/income-tax-in-india\/\">income tax<\/a> returns, one must first log on to the Income Tax India website.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2:\u00a0<\/strong>Once on the official Income Tax e-filing website, the assessee must click on the \u201cLog In\u201d button.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3:\u00a0<\/strong>Users that have already registered with the IT department on the website can log in using their User ID and Password. After entering the correct details, click on \u201cLogin\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4:\u00a0<\/strong>Once logged in, the assessee must click on the button that says \u201cMy Account\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 5:\u00a0<\/strong>In the \u201cMy Account\u201d tab, select the option that says \u201cUpdate Digital Certificate\u201d. Once clicked, a download should automatically start \u2013 or the user will be faced by certain prompts and warnings of potential danger to the computer system because of an attempted download from an untrustworthy source. Click \u201cYes\u201d, \u201cAccept\u201d, or \u201cContinue\u201d depending on the browser being used.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 6:\u00a0<\/strong>A download should start at this point, which contains a file from the Income Tax Department called \u201cStoreCertificate\u201d. This will store a local copy of the digital signature on your computer system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 7:\u00a0<\/strong>Go back to the open web page and click on \u201cUpload your USB Token\u201d. This will take you to a page with a button that says \u201cSelect your USB Token Certificate\u201d and \u201cBrowse\u201d. Click on this button and it will open a selection prompt window.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 8:\u00a0<\/strong>In the selection window, find and select the file you just downloaded. It\u2019s usually found in the path C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\eTPKCS11.dll.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 9:\u00a0<\/strong>Select the file mentioned above (eTPKCS11.dll) and click \u201cOkay\u201d, then enter the PIN code (Token Password), and then click on \u201cSign\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Upload Income Tax Return Online using a Digital Signature:<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Step 1:\u00a0<\/strong>Fill out and properly prepare the\u00a0Income Tax Return\u00a0form, generate the file as an XML file, and save it on your local computer system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2:\u00a0<\/strong>Open the login page of the Income Tax India website, and, using your credentials, log into your private income tax management dashboard.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3:\u00a0<\/strong>Find and click on the tab that says \u201cSubmit Return\u201d, and then select the appropriate Assessment Year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4:\u00a0<\/strong>Select the Form Name from the drop-down menu that\u2019s provided on the page.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 5:\u00a0<\/strong>The next field asks the question \u201cDo you want to Digitally sign the file?\u201d select the \u201cYes\u201d option.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 6:\u00a0<\/strong>The next field requires you to choose the type of digital signature you wish you use \u2013 \u201cSign with .PFX file\u201d, or \u201cSign with USB Token\u201d. Pick the right option depending on your personal income tax return filing requirements, and upload the Income Tax Return using the Digital Signature Certificate, and authenticate the same.<\/p>\n<p>Using a digital signature and e-filing the income tax return has a number of benefits, not limited to streamlining the efficiency of the entire process. It ensures a reduced amount of fraud and misrepresentation and ensures that individual taxpayers take individual responsibility for managing their own finances in terms of\u00a0filing income tax returns.
