All about UAN Number

A Universal Account Number, or UAN as it is called in its abbreviated form, is a 12-digit code allotted to employees whose employers are making contributions towards EPF. The number once allotted does not change for an employee during the course of his/her lifetime.

Benefits of UAN Number

Allotment of UAN Number and Member ID

The allotment of UAN is done by the EPFO provided that the employer of an individual makes the requisite EPF contribution. If an individual does not possess a UAN then the employer must request for the same and the EPFO will generate one within two months. Along with the UAN, the EPFO will also provide a Member ID which allows an employer to deposit their employees’ EPF money. The Member ID, unlike the UAN, changes with every change in job.

For individuals who already have a UAN, their employers will have to request the EPFO to generate a new ID for their employee. The Member ID will then be linked to the employee’s UAN following the submission of Form 11. The employer must then allot the number to the employee and request for KYC details which the employer will then have to upload on the EPFO website. In case the employee uploads the details on the website, a digital verification of the KYC details must be done by the employer. Each UAN can be linked to a maximum of ten Member IDs and it helps in tracking the employee’s contribution towards EPF throughout his/her entire career.

The KYC documents that can be submitted to your employer include National Population Register, Driving License, Bank Account Number, Ration Card, Passport, Election Card, Permanent Account Number and AADHAAR.
